How are Vintage Clothes Given a Modern Twist Today?

October 10th, 2011

Vintage clothes are becoming increasingly popular today. Top celebrities such as Julia Roberts, Renee Zellweger and even models including Kate Moss, have been seen wearing this early 20th century style of clothing. It is a way to not only recycle the clothes – which benefits the environment – but it is an opportunity to relive this unique fashion with a modern twist. Below are just some of the popular vintage styles we see today, from shoes to dresses.

Vintage clothes, are considered those fashions which have come from the 1920s to 1990s; whereas prior to the 1920s is considered the antique era. Many people enjoy wearing vintage clothes because it is almost like wearing a piece of history because the clothing has character to it. We see some women wear a vintage slip for example but add modern Seventy Seven Diamonds accessories or a fitted belt with it. Fashion today sometimes relies on vintage styles for inspiration and we often see clothes our parents might wear, suddenly coming back into fashion. There have been many vintage items which have made a comeback, such as leggings and periwinkle pointed shoes. These are two of the most popular fashions which are still common today. Girls however, wear black leggings under a short dress or a skirt, rather than wearing them as trousers. Pointed-toe shoes have remained popular for many years. The periwinkle shoes are more popular with women, who can now buy flat or heeled versions of this style.

Vintage clothes can be found in markets or one off shops. They are normally inexpensive because they are second hand. However, wedding dresses or fur coats remain pricey as it is a garment of high quality. A typical 1950s vintage wedding dress looks rather like a night gown. We see a long, silk, fitted dress, embroidered with pearls and edged with ruffles. These haven’t been particularly popular as many women choose designer or custom made dresses these days.

Pumpkin Soup

October 1st, 2010

Old fashioned Pumpkin Soup

1 cup chopped onions
1 small minced garlic
2 tbs butter
6 cups chicken stock
3 cups cooked and mashed pumpkin
1/2 cup cream
2 teaspoons salt
1 teaspoon thyme
6 peppercorns
1 teaspoon parsley

In a large pot saute onions, garlic, and butter until slightly brown in color. Add chicken stock and cream and stir well. Add cooked pumpkin (usually I chop it into cubes and boil it in a pot like one would cook potatoes). Keep stirring and add remaining ingredients. Bring to boil, then let simmer for several minutes. Keep stirring and cook until all ingredients are well mixed and thoroughly warmed.

Workin’ on the Site :)

September 23rd, 2010

Hello all,

I’ve been very busy these last few months working on this site. It isn’t anything you’ll notice; but I am very excited!

First off, I changed all the meta tags to now reflect what this site is going to become. Then I changed the navigation at the top of the page. Right now, I’m in the middle of clicking on each page to make sure it features the new changes and checking all of the links. It isn’t as fun or glorious as adding new content; but it needs to be done. I’m still debating about changing the goodies’ page up a bit…but I still haven’t decided about that.

After all of this gets done, it will be time to work on our online shop. How fun!

If ya’ll have any comments about the site, I’m open to suggestions.

Web designer Wanted!!!

September 9th, 2010

Ok, I’ve gone round in circles long enough. Shopping carts frustrate me. I spent all this time learning HTML to help create a beautiful site and now in the admin panel, it doesn’t look a thing like those codes I spent so long to understand!!! Do you ever feel like banging your head against a wall?

So to get to the point, I’m looking for a web designer. Hopefully, they can work on the cart and I can spend my time working on the rest of the site.  (My hand coded pages still need some help) :)

No More Comments

August 27th, 2010

Due to the increasing amount of spam, I’ve turned off the comment feature on my blog. :(

Reading thousands of links to discount software and prescription drugs took away from time I could be updating this site. Besides… Lady Cordelia would never allow such things as they don’t have due regard for decency and decorum.

Randomness…

July 10th, 2010

Hello, or should I say Goodnight? It’s close to midnight here, and yet I’m still awake. Only instead of being curled up under the blankets with a novel, I’m watching tv. Normally, I read.

Tonight I’m watching You’ve Got Mail. Such a sweet movie. I’ve always wanted to own a bookstore because I read so much. So it’s no wonder I love this movie…She’s even caught reading Pride and Prejudice and he accuses her of liking Mr. Darcy. Who doesn’t? He’s the perfect hero. Darcy would never leave her sitting at the cafe or make her close her shop. What I really want to  know is how can two people fall in love online and yet hate each other in real life? Hmmm…

Why am I even watching this movie? I’ve only seen it a dozen times and yet it is so sweet at the end. I’m a sucker for movies that end happily ever after, and the references to my dear Mr. Darcy doesn’t hurt anything either. I really shouldn’t say much more about the movie or I’ll give away the ending. It would make the perfect book. Do you think the movie could be based on a book? It’s late and I tend to ramble about random things when I get sleepy. I really should head for bed…

Quick Update

June 29th, 2010

Hello Sweets,

Just a quick entry to let you know, I’ve changed the main page up a bit. Also updated the cat page with my new cats. I’ve noticed the font is very small in IE but looks fine in Firefox. Hoping to get that fixed soon!

The Secret of Happiness

June 20th, 2010

The following is a quote from Norman Vincent Peale’s The Power of Positive Thinking.

The way to happiness:

Keep your heart free from hate,
Your mind free from worry,
Live simply, expect little, give much.
Fill your life with love,
Scatter sunshine.
Forget self, think of others.
Do as you would be done by.

Sunday Morning

June 19th, 2010

I’ve been reading a great book about thinking positively and being happy. It has inspired me to create the Sunday Morning Inspiration category. This will contain uplifting thoughts, quotes, and Bible verses.

Not everyone who visits my site is religious or goes to church. I honestly don’t mean to offend anyone; but I am a Christian and see no reason for not sharing my faith. The rest of our site will still maintain our policy of no politics or religion. As these don’t make for very good tea time conversation, you know. I promise to limit all spiritual posts to this particular category. If any of this offends you, then just don’t click on our new category. And don’t say I didn’t warn you.

Have a blessed day!

Macaroni and Cheese

May 13th, 2010

1 box of elbow macaroni
1/4 cup margarine
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper
1 small onion, chopped
1/4 cup flour
1 3/4 cup milk
2 8oz blocks of sharp cheddar cheese cut into cubes

Cook macaroni until tender, drain, and set aside. Saute the onion in a saucepan with margarine, salt, and pepper. Cook until onion is brown and tender. Add flour, followed by milk. Heat until boiling, and keep stirring to avoid burning. Add cheese and stir until melted. Mix cheese sauce and cooked macaroni together in a well greased casserole dish. Bake at 375 until slightly brown on top.
